If our design philosophy
inpires you,
there are a range of services
we can provide. |
 |
For consultations, we will meet with you on your project site. A specialized Landscape Questionnaire will be sent before the first meeting for you to complete and return. The questionnaire allows us to be aware of your needs and desires prior to that meeting, saving valuable consultation time.
During the first consultation we will provide a range of solutions and suggestions, identify problems and possibilities, and provide plant recommendations. The consultation often ends with a decision to contract with us for further design services. Plant Identification and gardening tips for your site may be included in consultations.
Site Assessment
Our assessment will consider the soils, existing vegetation, existing features (boulders, specimen trees and shrubs, views, etc.), wildlife habitat, slope, site climate (wind & sun), runoff potential, wildfire concerns, existing buildings and hardscape, utilities and more. Information gathered from this assessment is critical to a well thought out design.
Project Designs
We provide a wide range of design opportunities to the client:
• Simple Hand Drawn Sketch – This is used as a guide to convey conceptual design ideas.
• Color Photo Design Booklet- This is a design technique unique to SMLA. We photograph the site and assemble a Publisher Document with text and key notes to describe the treatment for each photo. A schedule is included providing a summary of the plants suggested in the design along with a list of suggested landscape contractors and specialists.
• Residential Design – This requires a scaled site plan of the project area. These designs range from a single Illustrative Landscape Plan sheet to a 5-6 sheet set of Site, Hardscape, Water Harvesting & Irrigation, Planting and Low-voltage Lighting Plans with maintenance schedule, notes and details. Each design is tailored for the client and the project site. The cost of these designs ranges from $1,500 - $8,000 depending on what is desired and required.
• Landscapes for the Highlands – This is a recent addition to our list of unique products. It is an 84 page spiral bound full-color reference book that contains photographs and detailed information about native plants available for design in our region.

Entry Design
The entry is the most crucial portion of the landscape as more people pass through this space than any other
outdoor area.
A rich, inviting entry will be long remembered by visitors to your home.

Patio, Deck and
Outdoor Space Design
We create multi-purpose spaces that make people want to be outdoors, and that keep the beauty of nature
near to enjoy.
|
Graywater Harvesting Design
This includes home assessment, piping design and layout to maximize the use of graywater, conserving water as well as enhancing the growth of plantings.
Rainwater Harvesting Design
This includes a Water Budget (water harvesting potential vs. landscape requirements), catchment systems (mechanical and passive)and land forming design.

Design with Native Plants
Our focus is on using plants that are locally or regionally native to the project area. These plants will become established in just a few years. The result is a very low maintenance landscape that lives in balance with itself (requiring no chemicals or artificial supplements).
Creating balance and allowing diversity are key to creating a habitat or pollinator garden. |
Water Feature Designs
The fall of even a small bit of water brings a musical, soothing effect to your yard. Water features blend well with a native landscape, and are
a major attraction for wildlife.
These can vary from a simple table-top feature to a full scale waterfall, stream and pond.

|
Pollinator Gardens
Who doesn’t want beautiful hummingbirds, butterflies and other wildlife flitting about fragrant flowers, bringing color
and life to the yard?
We can create this! |
 |
 |
| |
Habitat Gardens – Similar in concept to the pollinator gardens but include wider range of techniques to recreate a more natural area near the home.
|
 |
Healing Gardens
A healing garden can be designed for a specific health concern or for a general calming environment to reduce the stress of everyday life.
We can design one or several spaces
for different but related needs. |
|
Childhood Landscapes
These fun, fanciful, and fascinating spaces stimulate a child's natural wonder and outdoor learning, and they will provide a lifetime of memories
for children and adults alike. |
